Good Relationships Require Intentionality

Relationships are truly one of God’s greatest gifts. Some of life’s best moments are shared with others, and even difficult moments can feel a little easier when we don’t have to face them alone. We all want close friendships, strong families, and a community where we feel known, supported, and loved. Yet life gets busy, and before we know it, the people who matter most are getting less of our time and attention. We put off making that phone call, rush through conversations, and tell ourselves we’ll deal with that disagreement another day (if that day ever comes).

When we begin to feel disconnected, we may think we need more friends, more opportunities to socialize, or even another app on our phones to help us feel connected. Meeting new people can be a wonderful thing, but sometimes God wants us to start with the relationships we already have, right before our eyes. Jesus models this truth: good relationships require intentionality.

Throughout the Intentional series, we have been looking at the life of Jesus and how His example shows us why loving others with intention helps build good relationships. Jesus served people in the simplest ways. He noticed those who were overlooked, made time to listen, and spoke honestly while still showing kindness. He did not ignore hurt or division, and He taught us to seek peace when it is safe and possible. Jesus reminds us that God’s love is intentional and should be seen in the way we treat one another.

Take a moment to consider where our relationships may need us to be more intentional. Maybe it means being more present with someone we love, starting a conversation we have been putting off, taking a small step toward peace, or finding a simple way to serve. It may be as simple as making a phone call, offering a listening ear, apologizing, bringing a meal, or offering to help. Intentionality matters because it can strengthen a relationship and remind someone that they are not alone.

In John 13:15, Jesus said, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”

The good news is that Jesus loved us first! This means we don’t have to rely on our own strength to love others and we can look to Jesus to show us how to intentionally love others. We can ask Him to help us listen, forgive, serve, and be there for the people around us, even during difficult times.

Just think about how different our world could be if we took the time to notice people, really listened to one another, refused to let every disagreement pull us apart, and showed up when someone needed help. We may not be able to change the whole world at once, but we can begin with the way we care for the people around us.

As a church, may we continue to help make that vision a reality. Who might God be asking you to make room for today? Ask Him to show you one relationship that needs greater intention, and then take one simple step.
